On the morning of 10 July 2024, thousands of protesting students blocked several roadways — including the Dhaka-Aricha highway approximately 40 km (25 mi) northwest of the capital Dhaka — for the tenth consecutive day of demonstrations. The blockage caused significant traffic disruptions in several parts of Dhaka as protesters demanded the elimination of the government job quota system, which had initially ended in 2018 but was reinstated in June by Dhaka’s High Court. The protesters argue that the system, which reserves entry-level government positions for the children and grandchildren of 1971 freedom fighters, disproportionately benefits the grandchildren of the freedom fighters at the expense of more qualified candidates. There were no reports of protest-related injuries. In response to the protest, the government announced that the quota system will be temporarily suspended.
