On 22 June 2021, indigenous protesters armed with bows and arrows clashed with police officers in front of the National Congress building in the capital Brasilia. The protesters shot arrows and other projectiles at police officers during an attempt to enter the congressional building. Security personnel used tear gas, pepper spray and stun grenades to dispel the protesters. Two protesters were hospitalized with severe injuries and about a dozen others suffered minor injuries. In addition, three police officers were injured in the violence. An estimated 500 activists had gathered at the site to denounce a controversial land reform bill that would alter regulations governing protected indigenous land. The protest-related violence prompted Congress to suspend a committee session on the bill.
