On 11 October 2021, leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) rebel group claimed that the Ethiopian military has launched a major ground offensive aimed at defeating TPLF forces in the northern region of Tigray, as well as in parts of the neighboring region of Amhara, which Tigrayan forces have occupied since June 2021. According to the TPLF, government forces have attacked TPLF troops in the northern region of Amhara, located to the south of Tigray, with tanks, artillery, airstrikes and drone strikes. Ethiopian officials have not confirmed the offensive or provided further details. There have been no reports of casualties.
