On 7 February 2024, the March 23 movement (M23) rebel group launched an attack on the town of Sake in North Kivu province, located approximately 20 km (12 mi) northwest of the provincial capital Goma. The assault forced thousands of civilians to flee toward Goma. Approximately 42,000 people have been displaced from their homes over the past week, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The recent escalation of fighting between the rebel group and government soldiers has raised fears of M23 rebels seizing control of Goma, where a rocket struck the Lac Vert neighborhood on 7 February but caused no significant damage or casualties.
