On 29 November 2023, Panama’s Supreme Court ruled that the government’s renewal of a mining contract with Canadian-owned mining company First Quantum Minerals, known as Law 406, is unconstitutional. The contract’s renewal triggered weekslong disruptive protests and blockades across the country as demonstrators claimed the law would harm the environment and jeopardize the water supply to thousands of local residents. In response to the ruling, First Quantum Minerals is expected to shut down its Panamanian subsidiary and mine, which the company claims provided approximately 40,000 jobs in Panama. Members of the Union of Panamanian Mining Workers have organized protests to denounce the court’s verdict.
