On 20 June 2023, riot police supported by military personnel deployed to the town of Tamara — located approximately 25 km (15 mi) northeast of Tegucigalpa — following a riot at the Women’s Center for Social Adaptation (CEFAS) prison. According to local authorities, at least 51 inmates were killed in the violence, which was sparked by a dispute between members of the rival Mara Salvatucha (MS-13) and 18th Street gangs. Security personnel cordoned off all roads within the vicinity of the prison to secure the area. Incarceration of suspected gang members has increased significantly since November 2022, following the imposition of President Xiomara Castro de Zelaya’s partial anti-gang state of emergency in major urban centers.
