On 23 May 2024, a group of seven hooded rioters attacked a RED public transit bus with Molotov cocktails and fireworks at the intersection of Grecia and Ignacio Carrera Pinto avenues, located in the Ñuñoa commune approximately 5 km (3 mi) southeast of central Santiago. Firefighters and police officers cordoned off the streets to extinguish the subsequent vehicle fire. The bus driver and passengers safely evacuated before the vehicle caught fire. Meanwhile, a separate group of rioters erected a barrier on Nueva Providencia avenue, halting traffic until the arrival of police officers. Local authorities identified both groups of rioters as anarchist students.
