On 28 June 2022, the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi issued a Security Alert regarding the possibility of violence during counterdemonstrations staged during Tbilisi Pride Week events, which reads in part as follows: “Tbilisi Pride and other LGBTQI+ NGOs and supporters will hold several Pride Week events from June 28, 2022 through July 3, 2022 around the city of Tbilisi. Numerous road closures and police checkpoints are expected to be in place, making travel around the city difficult near these venues, which include Khidi Club on June 28, the Sheraton Hotel on June 30, and Mezisumzira Park July 2-3. Expect a heavy police presence around and in metro stations and police patrols around the venues. There is a high likelihood of violent confrontations aimed at disrupting Pride Week events. Far-right groups have expressed a desire to disrupt these events by conducting counterdemonstrations. These same groups carried out acts of violence last year at similar events, culminating in a day of violence on July 5, 2021, in which roving flash mobs destroyed property, attacked journalists, fought with police, and attacked people they suspected of being from the LGBTQI+ community.”
