On 10 March 2023, the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City issued a Security Alert regarding upcoming general elections, which reads in part as follows: “In 2023, Guatemala will hold elections for its president, vice president, congressional seats, and other governmental positions, including all 340 mayors. The official campaign season for these general elections will begin on March 27, 2023. The first round of voting is scheduled for June 25, 2023, and, if necessary, the second round of voting for the presidential and vice-presidential races is now scheduled for August 20, 2023.
“The months leading up to election season are typically characterized by large rallies, demonstrations, and other events associated with political campaigning. Such events could cause increased traffic and otherwise disrupt movement, complicating travel. Local governmental services might also be limited, delayed, or unavailable at times during the election season. The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens be aware and vigilant, monitor local news, avoid affected areas, and exercise caution.”
