On 26 December 2022, the Serbian government placed its security personnel stationed along the border with Kosovo on a “high state of combat readiness” amid escalating tensions between Serbia and Kosovo. Serbia’s interior minister made the declaration following a 25 December shooting in the Kosovar town of Zubin Potok, where ethnic Serbs have blocked roads for the past two weeks over the arrest of a former police officer. Additional roadblocks were set up in northern Kosovo on 27 December, including in the town of Mitrovica. European Union and National Atlantic Treaty Organization officials have condemned the escalation of tensions and are attempting to mediate in an effort to improve the deteriorating relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
