As of 18 December 2023, the container shipping conglomerate Maersk and the BP oil and gas company, along with several other Western firms, have temporarily paused all shipments through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait amid continuing aerial attacks perpetrated by Yemen-based Houthi militants against vessels passing through the strait. Most recently, on 15 December Houthis fired a drone at the Liberia-flagged Al-Jasrah container vessel and two ballistic missiles at the Liberia-flagged MSC Palatium III container vessel traveling through the strait. The drone struck the Al-Jasrah, causing a fire but no injuries. One of the two missiles fired at the Palatium hit the ship, igniting a blaze. At least 46 container vessels have already diverted from the Red Sea and are transiting the southern tip of Africa.
