On 6 March 2024, the governor of the state of New York announced that National Guard soldiers and State Police officers will be deployed to the New York City subway system in an effort to combat crime. A total of 1,000 security personnel are being posted, which comprise 750 soldiers of the New York National Guard and 250 officers from the State Police and Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The expanded security deployment, mostly to support the city police with bag searches at subway station entrances, follows at least three homicides in the subway system over the past two months, along with multiple assaults. The mayor of New York City recently deployed an additional 1,000 police officers after violent crime in the subway system increased by 45% in January 2024 compared to the same month the previous year.
