Shortly before 1200 local time (1000 UTC) on 31 May 2024, an individual armed with a knife carried out a stabbing attack in the market square of the southwestern German city of Mannheim, located approximately 85 km (50 mi) south of Frankfurt. Preliminary reports indicate that the assailant may have targeted a far-right activist and prominent detractor of Islam, who was holding a rally in the square. Several individuals, including the suspected target and a police officer, were wounded in the attack. Police officers shot and wounded the assailant. Vehicular traffic and tram operations in the vicinity of the square have been suspended. The motive for the attack is currently under investigation.
