On 29 June 2022, President Guillermo Lasso declared a 30-day state of emergency in the provinces of Azuay, Imbabura, Orellana and Sucumbíos amid ongoing protests over the country’s cost-of-living crisis. Authorities are deploying National Police officers to the four provinces as part of the state of emergency. Additionally, a curfew has been implemented in Azuay from 2100-0500 local time (0200-1000 UTC) and in Orellana and Sucumbíos from 1900-0500 local time. Discussions have resumed between the government and leaders of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) – who are leading the protests — but demonstrations throughout the country are expected to continue through at least early July.
