On 13 July 2023, President Bola Tinubu declared a national state of emergency to address shortages and the rising costs of basic food items in Nigeria. The emergency declaration allows the National Security Council to oversee all matters concerning food and water affordability and availability. Seed and fertilizer reserves will be distributed to farmers to help combat the insecurity, and a National Commodity Board has been created to monitor the prices of food to help facilitate price stabilization. The Ministry of Agriculture additionally will work to use water resources to ensure the adequate irrigation of farmlands. Food prices rose significantly in the country after the government ended longstanding fuel subsidies.
