On 9 January 2024, authorities announced a state of emergency for all Peruvian regions bordering Ecuador due to the ongoing unrest in Ecuador following multiple prison riots after the escape of the leader of the Los Choneros gang. The emergency declaration applies to the Tumbes, Amazonas, Cajamarca and Loreto regions. Security personnel have been deployed to the border area to aid police officers stationed along Peru’s border with Ecuador. In addition, President Dina Boluarte has ordered the defense and interior ministers to travel to Tumbes to coordinate the protection of the border.
