On 28 May 2021, the government extended the existing coronavirus-related state of emergency in the capital Tokyo, as well as in the prefectures of Aichi, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Hyogo, Kyoto, Okayama, Okinawa and Osaka, until 20 June; the measure was scheduled to expire on 31 May. Under the order, commercial businesses are to close nightly by 2000 local time (1100 UTC), while bars and restaurants are barred from serving alcohol and must close by 2000 local time. Additionally, large gatherings are limited to a maximum of 50% of a venue’s capacity, or 5,000 attendees at most.
