On 22 May 2024, Haitian government officials announced that the current state of emergency and nightly curfew in Ouest department, in which the capital Port-au-Prince is located, will be extended until at least 8 June. During the state of emergency — initially declared in March following an outbreak of armed gang violence in Port-au-Prince — a curfew is being imposed from 2200-0500 local time (0200-0900 UTC) nightly. Additionally, all public demonstrations will remain prohibited. The emergency measures have been persistently renewed since their implementation due to continued gang violence.
