At approximately 1600 local time (1130 UTC) on 11 January 2023, an explosion occurred near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in the capital Kabul. Taliban officials reported at least 20 people killed, while a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that at least five Chinese nationals were wounded. Initial reports indicate that a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle-borne explosive device in front of the building during a meeting between Chinese and Taliban government officials. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack; however, the Islamic State in Khorasan Province group frequently perpetrates attacks in Kabul.
