On 2 April 2021, approximately 100 suspected Islamist militants assaulted a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) camp in the northern city of Aguelhok with gunfire, mortar shells and an attempted vehicle-borne suicide bombing. At least four U.N. peacekeepers and 20 militants were killed, and 19 more peacekeepers were wounded. In a separate attack on the same day, militants assaulted Malian troops at a military post in the central city of Diafarabe, killing 10 Malian soldiers and wounding 10 others.
