On 10 January 2023, suspected Islamist militants conducted coordinated attacks targeting two convoys of Malian soldiers in central Mali. The attacks – which began with the detonation of roadside bombs — took place between Dia and Diafarabe villages and between the towns of Koumara and Macina. The attacks killed 14 Malian soldiers and wounded 11 more. At least 30 militants were also killed. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks; however, the Islamic State militant group and al-Qaeda typically carry out similar attacks in Mali.
