At approximately 0500 local time/UTC on 24 April 2022, suspected Islamist militants launched simultaneous attacks on three military bases in the central towns of Sévaré, Niono and Bapho. Suicide attackers reportedly drove vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices into the barracks. A gunbattle occurred between security personnel and the assailants following an explosion at the Sévaré military base. Media reports, citing an anonymous military official, stated that the Bapho base — where shrapnel from a blast struck a helicopter – sustained the most damage. The Malian military announced that six soldiers were killed and 15 others were wounded at the base in Sevare. Additionally, five soldiers were wounded at the other two bases.
