n the evening of 6 June 2024, police officers used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse pro-Palestinian demonstrators who had gathered at the McGill University downtown campus in the city of Montréal, located in Québec province. Earlier in the day, approximately 100 protesters had erected fences in front of an administration building while their associates occupied the building’s third floor and displayed pro-Palestinian banners at the windows. According to university officials, protesters vandalized the interior and exterior parts of the building and damaged furniture. Authorities arrested 13 people for occupying the building and two others for obstructing a police officer. The demonstrators, led by the student activist group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights, demand that the university divest from corporations with ties to Israel. The latest incident at McGill University follows related protest encampments that initially emerged on the campus in late April.
