On 21 December 2023, police officers fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse Baluch activists who marched to the capital Islamabad to protest disappearances of men from Baluchistan province. The protesters, led by female activists, began their march to Islamabad from the city of Turbat on 28 November. Police officers used baton charges to prevent the protesters from entering the capital city’s Red Zone, which houses government buildings. Authorities arrested at least 200 people, including the main protest leader. Residents of Baluchistan are angry about the recent death of a terrorism suspect in police custody and alleged extrajudicial killings occurring in the province.
