On 5 September 2024, police officers in the capital Bogotá deployed tear gas to disperse protesters manning roadblocks associated with a nationwide truck drivers’ strike against the removal of government fuel subsidies. According to local authorities, tear gas was used against protesters who failed to comply with orders to remove barriers blocking traffic at the intersection of 183rd Street and the North Highway in the Yomasa sector, as well as on Boyacá and Caracas Avenues — located in the Molinos and San Carlos neighborhoods. No arrests or injuries were reported. Later in the evening, President Gustavo Petro announced that government officials and strike organizers had reached an agreement to lift roadblocks, which had been maintained nationally for four consecutive days, as fuel price negotiations continue.
