On 12 December 2023, Dutch officials raised the national terrorism threat alert to Level 4 — the second-highest warning on a five-tier scale — which indicates that the risk of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands is “substantial.” The change comes amid the ongoing armed conflict between Hamas militants and the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip, as well as due to threats of retaliation following acts of Quran desecration in Sweden and Denmark. Additionally, authorities have arrested several individuals suspected of intending to carry out terrorist acts in the Netherlands. Despite the escalation of the countrywide threat level, officials maintain that there are no immediate direct threats to the Netherlands.
