On 21 September 2023, thousands of Armenians took to the streets of the capital Yerevan for a second consecutive day, calling for the resignation of Prime Minster Nikol Pashinyan following the Azerbaijani military victory in the disputed separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Demonstrators showing support for ethnic Armenians living in the breakaway region gathered in Yerevan’s Republic Square and blocked major roadways. At least 34 police officers and demonstrators were injured in ensuing clashes, and an unspecified number of people were detained. Anti-government demonstrations in relation to the Azerbaijan’s control of the breakaway region are likely to continue in Yerevan in the coming days as Armenians resent their government’s inaction to support separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian separatists agreed to a truce and surrendered to the Azerbaijani military on 20 September, the day after Azerbaijan launched a major offensive in the region.
