On 11 September 2024, thousands of protesters gathered outside the National Congress building in central Buenos Aires, the capital, to protest the rejection of a finance bill that would increase payment amounts for pensioners. The protest broke out after the Chamber of Deputies failed to override a presidential veto that blocked the pension hike. Protesters engaged in intense clashes with riot police, during which officers used their batons, tear gas and rubber bullets against the crowd. At least 12 protesters were injured in the violence, while three protesters were arrested. Following the clashes, police officers closed all streets within the vicinity of the Congress building.
