On 18 September 2024, thousands of union members joined demonstrations in the cities of Melbourne and Sydney to protest the appointment of a government administrator to oversee the construction division of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU). In Melbourne, approximately 30,000 demonstrators chanted slogans and waved CFMEU flags outside of the city’s Trades Hall, while about 10,000 demonstrators took to the streets of Sydney and marched from Belmore Park to the state parliament house on Macquarie Street. There were significant disruptions due to the demonstrations, which followed associated gatherings held by union members in major cities across the country on 27 August.
