On 20 December 2023, thousands of Argentines took to the streets of the capital Buenos Aires to protest newly elected President Javier Milei’s emergency decree for economic deregulation. Approximately 3,000 protesters marched along the city’s Belgrano, Diagonal Sur, Diagonal Norte and Maipú avenues before rallying in Plaza de Mayo. According to local officials, three protesters were arrested following a minor physical altercation with police officers. Elsewhere, demonstrations against the decree, which will repeal multiple laws and regulations to advance the privatization of public companies, occurred in the cities of Lanús, Lomas de Zamora and Quilmes.
