On 26 January 2024, thousands of Australians took to the streets of the capital Canberra and other major cities, including Sydney and Melbourne, to protest Australia Day — the anniversary of British colonization of Australia. In Canberra, approximately 600 people marched to the Parliament House and breached police barriers outside the building before proceeding to the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. Meanwhile in Melbourne, thousands of protesters waving indigenous flags rallied outside the Victoria state parliament, causing transportation disruptions.Demonstrators demand the holiday be moved and replaced with a day of mourning named “Invasion Day.”
