On the morning of 27 January 2021, a truck illegally carrying fuel collided with a passenger bus in Santchou village, located in the West region of Cameroon. At least 53 people were killed, and 29 others were injured in the crash and resulting fire. A preliminary investigation indicated that the accident may have been caused by a combination of inclement weather, a potential defect with the vehicle’s brakes, and the speed at which the truck was traveling. The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene. According to the regional governor, the passenger bus was en route to Bafoussam — the capital of the West region — from the coastal city Douala.
