At approximately 1140 local time (0840 UTC) on 28 January 2024, two gunmen opened fire inside Santa Maria Catholic Church, located in the Sariyer area of Istanbul. The masked assailants entered the building during Sunday services and fatally shot an individual before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. Security personnel launched a manhunt and arrested two suspected perpetrators. At least 47 others were detained in a series of connected raids that culminated in apprehending the two suspects. Turkish officials stated that the attack was carried out by two foreigners — a Tajik national and a Russian national. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack.
