On 2 December 2023, a stabbing attack occurred on the Bir Hakeim bridge near the Eiffel tower in Paris. A French national carrying a knife and hammer attacked two individuals near the Quai de Grenelle, killing a German tourist before fleeing the scene and attacking two other individuals with a hammer. One of the two victims wounded in the latter attack was a British national. Police officers arrested the attacker shortly afterward. The assailant was undergoing psychiatric treatment and was previously arrested in 2016 and served four years in prison for planning a different attack. He was also listed on “fichier S” — a watch list of individuals considered to be a threat to national security. The detainee told authorities he perpetrated the attack due to the deaths of many Muslim individuals in Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories, as well as the situation in the Gaza Strip. French anti-terrorism prosecutors have launched an investigation into the attack.
