In the early morning hours of 12 January 2024, the U.S. and U.K. military forces conducted airstrikes against at least 60 Houthi targets across 16 locations in Yemen, including in the capital Sana’a and the port city of Hodeida. According to U.S. officials, the airstrikes — which utilized more than 100 precision munitions — were in response to the ongoing Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and were intended to degrade the Houthi’s abilities to conduct further strikes on vessels transiting the waterway. According to the Houthi spokesperson, at least five people were killed and six more were injured in the airstrikes. The Houthis have threatened to retaliate without offering additional details.
