On 9 June 2023, unidentified assailants carried out an attack on a U.N. Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) patrol that was traveling on the RN33 highway near the town of Ber, located approximately 50 km (30 mi) east of the regional capital Timbuktu. The assailants reportedly detonated a roadside improvised explosive device as the patrol passed by and then launched a small arms assault. At least one U.N. peacekeeper was killed in the attack, while four others were seriously injured
