On 17 June 2024, a group of unidentified criminals torched a local commuter bus on a portion of Avenida Brasil, located in Rio de Janeiro’s western Realengo area. According to local authorities, the perpetrators forced passengers off the bus prior to setting it ablaze, resulting in the temporary closure of Avenida Brasil to vehicular traffic. The suspects fled the scene prior to the arrival of police officers, who have since stated that the incident was in retaliation to an anti-gang police operation which took place in the city’s northern Complexo da Maré area on 16 June. Since the start of 2024, criminal groups have set ablaze eight commuter buses, while 32 others have been targeted in arson attacks over the previous year.
