On the morning of 14 March 2023, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated as the driver of the vehicle crashed it into a guesthouse at a hotel in Bardera, the second most populous city in the state of Jubaland. Several regional officials and military commanders were staying at the guesthouse at the time, including the leader of the Gedo administrative area. The blast killed at least six people, including five security guards, and wounded 11 others. The hotel building also sustained major damage. The militant group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
