On 27 September 2022, widespread demonstrations over the death of a woman in police custody continued for a 12th consecutive day in the capital Tehran and dozens of cities across Iran. Clashes between police officers and protesters occurred in numerous cities, including Karaj, Tabriz, Tehran, Qom and Yazd. Reports indicate that police officers fired live ammunition at demonstrators in Sanandaj, located in the administrative region of Kurdistan, after they burned their headscarves and chanted slogans against the country’s supreme leader. Thus far, at least 76 protesters have reportedly been killed. Authorities have arrested hundreds of people for participating in the demonstrations. The woman who died in police custody was arrested by the morality police unit in Tehran on 13 September for improperly wearing her headscarf.
