At approximately 1130 local time (1030 UTC) on 9 August 2020, gunmen riding on motorcycles attacked a group of aid workers near the town of Koure, located approximately 60 km (40 mi) southeast of the capital Niamey. The attackers killed eight people, including six French nationals and two Nigerien nationals. The deceased French nationals were affiliated with the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED), a French humanitarian organization. While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, several Islamist militant groups operate in Niger; attacks perpetrated by groups linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State have recently increased in the Sahel region as a whole.
