On 22 October 2020, the mayor of Dabou — a port town located approximately 50 km (30 mi) west of Abidjan — announced that at least six people were killed and 40 more were injured as a result of political violence that occurred in the city throughout the week. In an effort to quell the violence, authorities on 21 October imposed a nightly curfew from 1900-0600 local time/UTC — which is in effect until 25 October — and deployed additional security forces to the city. The unrest reportedly began during the evening of 19 October when supporters of the opposition clashed with supporters of President Alassane Ouattara, who is seeking a controversial third term as president in the upcoming election on 31 October.
