On the morning of 14 August 2022, a bomb detonated in the Cristo del Conseulo neighborhood of the southwestern coastal city of Guayaquil. The blast killed five people and injured 26 others. At least eight nearby residences and two vehicles were also destroyed. While no suspects linked to the attack have been arrested, local authorities believe the Los Tiguerones gang detonated the bomb in an attempt to assassinate a rival gang leader. In response, President Guillermo Lasso declared a 30-day state of emergency in the city of Guayaquil. The declaration allows law enforcement agencies to intensify operations against criminal organizations and grants expanded investigation powers. A joint task force of police and armed forces personnel will be responsible for maintaining order in Guayaquil during the state of emergency.
