A six-month ceasefire agreement between the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebel group and the Colombian government came into effect on 3 August 2023. The truce — set to last until the end of January 2024 — is expected to halt all fighting between the guerilla group and Colombian military and police forces. The ceasefire was announced on 9 June during negotiations between government officials and ELN representatives held in Havana, Cuba, in an effort to reach a comprehensive peace agreement. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has hailed the ceasefire deal with ELN as a significant step toward attaining his “total peace” plan.
