During the evening and early morning of 13 June 2023, clashes occurred between members of the Meiti and Kuki communities in Khamenlock village in India’s far northeastern Manipur region. Security forces arriving at the scene to intervene described the use of improvised explosive devices and other weapons during the clashes. At least 11 people were killed, and several others remain missing, with their status unknown. The region remains tense following widespread riots and violence that first broke out between the Meiti and Kuki communities on 3 May and has so far led to the deaths of approximately 100 people. The conflict was sparked by an initiative to extend preferential government benefits to the Meiti, the majority group in the area.
