On 19 June 2024, a hijacked commuter bus was set on fire by criminals in central Rio de Janeiro’s Rio Comprido area in an effort to impede an active military police operation against local drug trafficking gangs. According to local authorities, the torched bus was placed on Barão de Petrópolis Street, along with several burning dumpsters, to block police access to the gang-controlled Morro do Fogueteiro neighborhood. Traffic on Barão de Petrópolis Street was subsequently suspended due to an ensuing gunbattle between the criminals and police officers, which resulted in one death. Local gangs in Rio de Janeiro have recently hijacked and set fire to commuter buses in two other instances in retaliation to police operations.
