On 21 April 2024, armed gang members launched coordinated attacks in the capital Port-au-Prince, ahead of the installation of a nine-member transitional presidential council aimed at establishing a new government. Clashes between police officers and gang members were reported in the Lower Delmas neighborhood. Additionally, gunfire was heard near the National Palace, located nearly 4 km (2 mi) away, while loud blasts were reported from the neighborhood’s city hall. In the nearby suburb of Petion-Ville, gang members looted the State University of Haiti’s medical facility overnight. Approximately 90% of Port-au-Prince is now under gang control.
