Over the weekend of 23-24 December 2023, gunmen carried out coordinated attacks in rural villages in the north-central Plateau state. The assailants — suspected to be herders belonging to the Fulani tribe — set ablaze houses across at least 20 villages in the Barkin-Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu local government areas. At least 140 people were killed. The Nigerian army stated that soldiers have started clearance operations in pursuit of the attackers.
