At approximately 1200 local time (1000 UTC) on 1 June 2023, a man armed with a handgun opened fire in a café in the downtown area of the French commune of Nantua, located about 65 km (40 mi) southwest of the city of Geneva, Switzerland. The gunman shot and killed one person and wounded two others, allegedly in relation to an argument, before fleeing the scene. Law enforcement personnel located and arrested the suspect about three hours after the attack occurred. Emergency responders airlifted one of the individuals wounded in the shooting to a hospital in the city of Lyon. A large police presence remains active in the area.
