On the morning of 1 January 2023, gunmen driving armored vehicles opened fire on security personnel at the Cereso No.3 state prison and also on the local municipal police station during a coordinated attack in Ciudad Juárez, located approximately 10 km (5 mi) southeast of the U.S. border city of El Paso, Texas. The perpetrators overwhelmed security personnel at the prison and maintained control of the facility until the afternoon. The attacks facilitated the escapes of 25 inmates from the state prison, including a leader of the local Los Mexicles gang, and left 19 people dead — including 10 prison guards. In August 2022, a riot that began at the same Cereso state prison caused unrest in Ciudad Juárez, during which 11 people were killed.
