On the night of 8 June 2024, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group launched an attack on the main hospital in al-Fasher city, the capital of North Darfur state. The assailants opened fire, destroying hospital equipment and stole two ambulances, computers, and medical devices from the South Hospital. Most patients and medical personnel had already evacuated the hospital at the time of the attack, reportedly leaving 10 patients and some hospital staff at the facility. Two bodies found in the hospital following the attack were identified as a government soldier and a RSF fighter. The South Hospital, supported by the Doctors Without Borders aid group, was the last operating medical facility in the region.
